Who it’s for

When the seating wraps a corner, a fireplace flat on one wall plays to half the room—the other half sees glass at an angle and not much fire. You need a fire you can see from every seat. If you’re building or remodeling and want the fire to anchor the room from two sides, the Ortal Wilderness Corner 60 (right side) is the one; it builds into a framed wall, so it belongs in a new build or remodel rather than an existing masonry fireplace. Choose a standard single-sided unit instead and you’ll get the same warmth—just aimed at one couch.

What makes it special

Most gas fires look like gas fires. Ortal built the Wilderness burner the other way around: the flame rises through the log set the way it does in a real hearth, so from the couch it reads as a burning wood fire, without the wood. You choose the log set, so the fire suits the room it lives in.

The glass meets the corner without a frame breaking the view, so the fire turns the corner right along with your seating. And because it’s gas, the whole thing is a remote away: set a temperature and the flame adjusts itself to hold the room there.

Every unit includes a safety barrier, and you pick how: a mesh screen so fine it nearly disappears, or a Double Glass front whose small, nearly silent fans keep the outer pane within the 172°F safety standard while the room still gets the heat.

Possible downsides

• The Double Glass version runs on household power and won’t operate during an outage; the screen version can run on batteries instead.
• Right-side corner only: if your wall meets the corner on the other side, you want the left-side model.

If you want a wood fire’s presence in the corner without a wood fire’s work, the Wilderness Corner 60 is the right decision. The room it sits in becomes the one everyone ends up in.
