A flat fireplace faces one direction, and in an open room that means half the seating looks at a wall instead of a flame. So the furniture ends up arranged around the fireplace’s one good angle. A single-face unit gives the fire to one side of the room; this one gives it to the whole room.

What Makes It Special

The glass turns the corner in one clean sweep—no frame and no metal post breaking the view. Most fireplaces are a picture on a wall. This one is an object in the room: you see fire from the couch, from the kitchen, from the doorway.

Inside it, Ortal’s Wilderness burner stacks ceramic logs so the fire has the look of a real wood fire—logs, embers, flames rising among them—with a remote in your hand. Set the thermostat and the flame adjusts on its own to hold the room where you want it.

Every model includes a heat barrier: a protective screen so fine it’s nearly invisible, or a double-glass front whose outer pane stays far cooler than the fire-side glass—worth weighing with kids in the house. The screen models can run on battery backup, so a power outage doesn’t take the fire with it, as long as you’ve kept batteries in it.

Possible Downsides

• Double-glass models require household power and won’t operate during an outage; choose a screen model if that matters.
